Can You Wakesurf With a Regular SUP?

August 16, 2022 3 min read

The main differences between a wakeboard and a traditional SUP are their buoyancy and length. You'll learn how to carve the wake with both before you try to wakesurf on a regular SUP. A wakeboard will be shorter, more playful and less immediate, but a SUP will be faster and easier to maneuver. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced surfer, you'll need to find the right combination for you.

Surfboards Have More Buoyancy

Bounciness refers to the volume of a surfboard. It helps you float, but a thicker board requires more push-under volume and is hard to turn. Fortunately, the science of buoyancy explains why the thickness matters: the volume of a board is proportional to its weight in water, minus the force of gravity. So, the more buoyancy a surfboard has, the faster you can paddle and catch waves.

Surfboards have varying levels of buoyancy, as different boards are made differently. For example, foam-cored surfboards have more buoyancy than hard-topped models, and a thicker board will float more. Another important feature is a stringer. A stringer is the central strip of a surfboard. This strip is made of polyurethane and is made from a closed cell material, so it does not absorb water while in the water.

They Are Shorter

Regular urfboards Are Short- They are shorter than their longboard equivalents. This allows them to cater to a variety of surfers and conditions. The perception of shortness is individual, and a 6'0 board may be short to you. However, shorter boards can be as useful and fun as longboards of similar length. Here are a few reasons why shorter boards are so desirable.

Longboards are the original shape of surfboards and have undergone many changes over the years. They may now be made from wood or polyurethane. However, they can be cumbersome to carry and can be hard to maneuver when surfing. Regular surfboards are shorter than longboards, and are longer than step up or hybrid boards. A longboard is about nine feet long, so it's recommended that you purchase a longboard if you plan on surfing on a regular beach.

They Are More Playful

Wake surfing boards come in two basic shapes. Regular surfboards are symmetrical, while skim boards are shaped like skateboards. The skim shape has a flat base and smaller fins that produce a looser and playful feel on the water. This makes them perfect for beginners and intermediate riders because of their stability and ease of release. Skim boards also allow you to do tricks and spin around with ease.

Skim-style wakeboards are considered the most playful of the three styles, and are most preferred by riders looking to perform tricks. They are shorter than regular surfboards and have smaller fins, making them less buoyant and giving you a looser ride on the wake. A skim-style board is most suitable for intermediate-advanced riders. However, you can wake surf with a regular surfboard, too.

They Are Less Immediate

Wakesurfing is not as fast as surfboarding. The difference is primarily in the way the surfboard is shaped. A regular surfboard is shaped like a banana, with a pointed front and an angled up front. The extra surface area at the tail allows the board to plane easily without too much effort. A surfboard with a flat tail will plane much faster than one with a V-shaped tail.

While an ocean surfboard will give you a good ride behind the boat, it is not the best board for wake surfing. The speed of an ocean surfboard may not be as fast and it may run into the back of the boat. On the other hand, some ocean surfboards are similar to wakesurf boards, such as the Doomswell El Jefe. Ocean surfboards are longer and less responsive than wakesurf boards, but they can still be great for learning the sport.

They Are More Fluid

Compared to traditional longboards, regular surfboards are more fluid. This means that they will hold more water and are easier to paddle. Longboards also require a lot less energy to paddle than short surfboards. This is why they are a great choice for intermediate and advanced surfers. The difference in performance can be noticeable in the waves. Regular longboards are easier to paddle and turn, and they can hold more water during long-drawn turns.

If you are new to surfing, you should take advantage of the wave pools and wave simulators to test the performance of your new board. These pools often feature waves that are less powerful, and the speed will fall below the level of planing. This is where board volume and water density come into play. During a surf session at BSR, it is difficult to hit the planing limit of the wave, but it's important to keep in mind that less powerful waves will affect your ability to plan.
