Kitesurfing in August

July 19, 2022 4 min read

If you're wondering where you can go to kitesurf in August, here are some ideas: Essaouira, Cabarete, Boracay, and Mastichari on the Greek island of Kos. If you don't mind the heat and crowds, try a beach town with great vibes.

Essaouira

In the summer months, the town's main beach, Plage Essaouira, offers a range of breaks for kitesurfing. Located south of the medina, this beach is protected from the prevailing N-W swell by the rugged bulk of Mogador Island. Winter swells, however, can produce chest-high waves. Kitesurfing schools and foamy rentals are available right on the beach.

If you're new to kiteboarding and surfing, you can try your hand at learning to ride the newest wave in the town. The best time to go is in the afternoons, when the trade winds change and the heat goes away. Essaouira's winds are generally 15-25 knots in the afternoon, with the best waves occurring in the morning.

Cabarete

As one of the world's best kitesurfing destinations, Cabarete is the perfect town for beginners and pros alike. Its consistent winds all year round and wide range of kite spots mean that no matter your skill level, Cabarete is the right place to learn the sport. This town is known for its laidback vibe and lively nightlife, and you can expect to have an unforgettable experience here.

In addition to kiting, Cabarete has other activities and attractions for visitors. Aside from kiting, visitors can enjoy yoga and massage therapy at the local beachfront spas. Others can take up trapeze classes or go on an ATV or dirtbike adventure. Whatever you decide to do in Cabarete, make sure to enjoy the warm sun. Cabarete has something for everyone.

Boracay

The weather in August in the Philippines is ideal for kitesurfing. The weather is warm, with a consistent temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius. There are no rainy days in August. The beaches are usually dry and the island does not experience high rainfall. But don't expect the beach to be empty. During the holiday season, you'll have to deal with crowds and the beach may not be the best place for kitesurfing.

The best time to kitesurf in August is on the beach near Bulabog, which receives strong onshore wind. It is narrow at low tide and nearly impossible to reach at high tide. High tide will make it tricky to get your board up and will make the beach dangerous, especially on crowded days. Another alternative to Bulabog is Union Beach. Although it is not on Boracay Island, it is located next to it.

Mastichari on Kos

If you've ever dreamed of kitesurfing in August, Mastichari on Kos is the perfect spot. The white-sand beach here is backed by shady trees and a swaying northern sea breeze. The water is shallow and the waves are usually small. However, you might encounter low waves if the sea breeze is constant. Beach shoes may also be useful if you plan to go kitesurfing at this location.

You can easily reach the beach by car or bus. Psalidi is located only 15 minutes away from the center of Kos. It is also close to thermal baths and mountain villages such as Zia. You can take public transportation to the spot or hire a scooter or bike if you don't have your own kite gear. There are plenty of cheap bike rental services throughout the island.

Tarifa

Tarifa has some of the best conditions in the world for kiteboarding in August, but there are some things you should know before heading to the Spanish sun. The wind is light to moderate but can be strong and can kick up a big wind swell. Fortunately, you can find this kind of wind pretty much anywhere in Tarifa. Its strength and duration will depend on the direction of the wind, but it is typically between 40 and 50 knots and can last several weeks.

The wind is strong in Tarifa, but the beaches are packed with kiters. The water is also crowded, which can be a challenge for foilers. Tarifa is perfect for both beginners and intermediate kiters, with strong winds that make foiling challenging. Levante winds can be super strong and gusty, which makes for epic big air conditions. Kiters can expect some serious airs and kite loops!

Blouberg

Blouberg, South Africa is a great place to visit if you're a kitesurfer. There are many kitesurfing spots in the vicinity of the city, so it's easy to scale your day to your preferences. This small town is close to Table Mountain, baboons, and a lively market in Hout Bay. Some people say Blouberg reminds them of kiteboarding in Florida.

If you're travelling by car, you can rent a manual/standard vehicle from Rent A Cheapie. Automatic vehicles need to be booked in advance. Parking is readily available in Blouberg, but in high season it can be difficult. You can also secure a water key that unlocks the rental car. This way, you can easily go to any of the beaches to kitesurf, even if they're full.
