The Mediterranean Sea has many great locations for kite surfing, but you can find the best waves in the southern reaches of the island of Ibiza. El Medano, Famara Beach, Punta Paloma, Valdevaqueros, and Calahonda all provide great conditions for the sport. If you're looking for an easy place to start, read on.

El Medano

Located in southern Spain, El Medano is home to one of the world's most beautiful beaches and is a perfect destination for beginners and experienced kiters. The town was a small fishing village until the 1980s, when it saw rapid growth and hosted five World Windsurfing Championships. The beachfront is clean and the town center is a cosmopolitan mix of cafes, bars, and restaurants.

Famara Beach

If you're looking for the best kitesurfing in the Mediterranean, then you've come to the right place. Famara Beach is a fantastic spot, as the conditions are generally excellent. You can kitesurf at any time of the year, as conditions are usually perfect all year round. It's also home to several schools, so learning the sport here is easy.

Punta Paloma

The northernmost beach in Tarifa bay is a very clean and wide spot. Beginners can use Punta Paloma with the Levante wind. For experienced kiters, the Poniente wind can produce small waves and choppy conditions. It is possible to kitesurf in winter, but the sand dune can catch you.

Valdevaqueros

Tarifa is a paradise for outdoor sports enthusiasts, with endless opportunities to try out all kinds of activities. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, Tarifa is a hotspot for kiters of all levels and experience. The area features different spots for different wind conditions. One such spot is the Balneario, a small beach that has a strong levante wind, which comes straight from the Mediterranean.

El Gouna

The winds in El Gouna are constant, with warm water that's perfect for kiteboarding. The water is also shallow, making it a perfect place to learn new tricks. The thermal conditions of the Red Sea also help keep the water temperature consistent. A typical day will have 70 percent wind, which is ideal for learning new tricks and perfect for practicing a new one. If you're coming to El Gouna for a kitesurf holiday, it's a good idea to plan your trip for May/June to beat the heat.

Calblanque

There are plenty of opportunities to try out new water sports in Calblanque. The Mediterranean coastline is a kaleidoscope of landscapes and colours, a combination of cultural heritage and nature. Summer holidays in the South of France last until September, and kiteboarding is becoming a popular family activity. If you're looking for the best kitesurfing locations in the Mediterranean, here are five must-see destinations for you and your family.

Marmari

If you're looking for a place to learn the art of kitesurfing, Marmari, Greece is a great choice. This coastal village is located in a narrow straight between the islands of Euboea and Petali. It works best with the Meltemi (Northern) wind, but it's also great when the South, West, or North West blows. The closest major city is Karistos, which has 20 kilometers of beautiful coastline and blue water when the south wind blows.

Dakhla

Dakhla has a long stretch of beach with a lagoon and plenty of room to manoeuvre. The prevailing wind is sideshore/side-on from the right and the distance to the other side of the lagoon is ideal. You'll also find substantial shallow areas at both ends of the beach, which are great for recovering your board and taking a break. You'll be glad you did when you're able to ride waves for longer.

Cabanas De Tavira

Located on Portugal's sunny Algarve coast, Cabanas de Tavira is a small fishing village that has been a popular destination for kitesurfers since its first wave in 2004. The city is just five minutes by water taxi from the beach and offers a beautiful stretch of sandy shore. Whether you want to kitesurf for the first time or have been kitesurfing for years, this town has something for everyone. Its many beaches are great for families, groups of friends, and athletes of all levels.
