Surfing Gear

Besides the basic surfboard and wetsuit, you will also need to invest in a good quality wetsuit. Wetsuits have pockets of air that can fill with water and make you uncomfortable. Not only that, but they can also be heavy and cool you down. Generally, wetsuits are made of closed-cell foam neoprene. However, before you purchase a wetsuit, it is a good idea to try it out at a reputable surf shop.

Wetsuit

The wetsuit is a crucial piece of kit that protects a surfer's body from the elements. Originally created in the 1950s, the wetsuit has become a necessary part of the kit. Neoprene was invented by Hugh Bradner, though many attribute this invention to Jack O'Neill, a California surfboard manufacturer. It was developed in a Santa Cruz shop and a UCL lab, and changed surfing forever.

Rash Guard

A rash guard is a protective garment worn by surfers that provides protection from sun damage, abrasions, and sand particles. Generally made of Lycra or spandex, a blend of polyester and polyurethane, rash guards offer warmth, sun protection, and rash protection. Quality rash guards have flat-locked seams that sit close to the body and reduce chafing.

Traction Pads

If you're an avid surfer, you've probably heard of the importance of traction pads. They provide grip on the back of your foot to help you generate power through pumping. There are several different types of traction pads available, and some work better for certain riding styles than others. But unlike other surfing gear, traction pads cannot be removed for washing. If you've ever ridden with a scuffed up board, you know how painful it can be!

Fins

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced surfer, you'll need a leash. A leash prevents you from losing your board during big waves. Fins come in different sizes, shapes, profiles, and levels of flexibility. Depending on the type of waves you'll encounter, you can opt for one or several fins. A good leash will be durable and offer flexibility, and it will prevent you from slipping off your board.

Traction Stickers

In addition to surfing boots, traction stickers are also necessary for surfboards. They increase traction and grip. Without them, surfers will struggle to keep their balance. Traditional surf wax is a cheaper option, but it's not permanent and requires regular maintenance. Other, more innovative surfboard traction options include 'HexaTraction' stickers that can be placed on the front of the board. When combined with tail pads, they improve traction even more.

Board

While a surfboard is the most important piece of surfing gear, you may want to invest in other accessories as well. A good board bag will protect your board when it is not in use. Some surfers even invest in other gear such as a drone to follow them while surfing. Some of these accessories are absolutely necessary for some surfers, while others are entirely frivolous. This list is based on personal preference, but some of the most important gear for a beginner is the surfboard, surfwear, and a surfboard bag.
